Whilst watching a short film clip at a PEME sponsored awards ceremony, about a family affected by Ovarian Cancer, PEME’s Claire Garfield knew this was the charity she wanted to support by getting sponsorship for a half-marathon she was competing in.
As if running a half marathon wasn’t a big enough challenge Claire had now committed to raising £1000 for Ovarian Cancer Action.
Claire said “This wasn’t a difficult decision to make after watching the film clip; it made me realise just what my friend ‘Maria’ was facing each day.’ Maria has a young family and in December 2013 was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer stage 3. After 6 sessions of chemotherapy and an hysterectomy she got the all clear. But then in January 2015 Maria received the devastating news that the cancer had returned in her liver and within a couple of months spread to her stomach. Once again, Maria faced going through the gruelling prospect of 6 sessions of chemotherapy. In October 2015 Maria went for her results from her CT scan; unfortunately it wasn’t the news everyone had hoped for; the cancer had shrunk but small spots still remained on her liver and lungs. Maria will be monitored in 3 months’ time.”
Not only did Claire complete her first Half Marathon in an amazing time of 1 hour 58 minutes and 24 seconds, she exceeded her target of raising a £1000 for Ovarian Cancer Action and her total now stands at £1,155.
Maria is shown in the picture with Claire, who said “it was Maria that kept my determination going when at times training became tough due to injuries or too many pies. I am totally overwhelmed by everyone’s support and generosity in helping me to reach my target but most of all to my friend Maria who was waiting for me at the finish line.”
