An interesting insight can be gained about a business by knowing more about the individuals that have played a part in shaping the organisation. Darren Martin, started his PEME career as a technician and has progressed to Engineering Director, with responsibility for many technicians delivering Asset Care services and he is a specialist in Engineering Compliance.
From a young age, Darren had a clear career path; he wanted to go into the engineering industry, irrespective of it being electrical or mechanical and his ultimate goal was to own his own business. His first step towards this was to get himself on an engineering apprenticeship. At school he was good at games but lacked the faculty required to become a mechanical engineer, so on leaving, he went to work for a local firm in Stamford, as an electrical apprentice.
In 1989, Darren decided to broaden his skill-set and enrolled onto a HNC in electrically-biased building services, which stood him in good stead when he joined PEME in 1992 as an electrical technician, working on a FCMG client site. Whilst there, Darren progressed to Site Supervisor, then to Site Manager and finally his last role before becoming a PEME Director in 2002 was as Area Manager of the Eastern Region.
Darren was a member of a management buy-out team and decided to become a PEME Director because he had always had the ambition to own his own business, but he also shared the aim of all the directors at that time; “to make PEME the best it could be.” He feels he achieves a good work / home life balance because of the support he receives from his family. He spends his free time either on a ski-slope, country walking or enjoying a game of golf.
Darren’s proudest work-based achievements relate to the mentoring he does within his role; especially in cases where an individual runs the risk of becoming de-motivated and losing focus and he has helped them regain their passion for the industry. Darren plans to put in-place more mentoring across our business, from apprentices through to Chartered Engineers.
